Eight day of July it was.Meenakshi was sitting at her study desk constantly pressing the F5 on the keyboard, she hasn't eaten anything since morning her lips were dry so was her throat, she was murmuring the chant which her mother has told her.
After a while she got tired of pressing the key, and peered through the window and stared at the peak of the tree with blue sky in the background and patches of white clouds here and there and saw the sparrows chirping incandescently with wide opening their yellow beaks as if they are in for a revel and for a moment she was immersed in the scenery and forgot all about the result of her final CA paper for which she has been waiting since last two months and as she heard the footsteps nearing her,her thoughts got drifted away.
Her mother came with a glass of milk and couple of toasts with jam on one and butter on the other, like she always liked. She ruffled her hair and kissed her forehead and told her not to worry and eat something.
So she gulped down the milk and enjoyed the toasts and thought about the sparrows and their revel.
And the computer screen flashed PASSED, she rocketed from her chair straight to the kitchen where her mother was cooking something and she hugged her from the back and kissed her and told her the celebratory news and tears came down the mother's eyes and she kissed her and told her, she is proud of her.
And they both darted to the drawing room, where the landline telephone was fixed, she dailed her father's number and told him about the result and he paraphrased her mother's words and said "I am proud of you".
All this filled her with an evangelic zeal as this was her dream come true.
Few years later.
She was four months pregnant working on her desk and she felt a little pain. So she left the office for home where her mother in law was lying on the dewan watching television and was surprised at her early arrival and enquired the reason and asked her to take some rest now as the maid won't come and she has to cook the dinner.
As she was already in pain and feeling grumpy she went to her room and lay down on the bed, without paying much of heed to the mother in law.
She woke up to the knock on the door by mother in law. She checked her mobile it was 7'o clock and she heard the old lady murmur 'God knows what Mohit saw in that girl...' which pissed her off.
So she decided to further her rest and waited for another knock on the door, which came just after couple of minutes, she didn't respond to that and after waiting some more the old lady came inside her room and asked 'Do have any plans for cooking the dinner, as I am already famished.'
Meenakshi straightened up a bit in bed, yawned and said
'I think we will order the food from outside.'
This left the old lady red faced and she retorted
'Why don't you just leaves the job, if you can't strike a balance in your life.'
Meenakshi smiled a sarcastic smile and said
'If only you can understand, I would explain, but just let it be.'
And she left the bed, tied her hair into a bun and headed towards the washroom to freshen up, leaving the old lady stranded in the room.
When she came back old lady has gone, so she took out her earphones and listened to some Arijit for a while, and strolled to the other room, where the old lady was still watching the television, and order the food, and informed her that Mohit will be late as he is busy in some meeting.
Two of them had the dinner, with minimum possible conversation, and went to their respective rooms after that.
And somewhere before midnight Mohit slipped into the bed, and started snoring which woke Meenakshi up, and she searched for her earplugs on the side table. And after successfully blocking out the cacophony of snores, she slept, only to be woken up by the alarm at 4:45 which she reluctantly snoozed, as in the back of her mind she knew about the next alarm which will buzz in exactly five minutes.
So she strengthened up herself in the bed before the next alarm and shook Mohit and he turned to other side and asked 'What time is it?' in his sleepy voice and she said 'Its already 5 Mohit. Just wake up. I don't feel pretty well today might take a leave.'
Mohit took the other pillow and turned to face her with wrinkled eyes 'Will you make the breakfast?'
'I can't. I told you I am not felling well, Mohit!' She replied.
' Okay Mini I will. Just gimme five more minutes please!'
'Okay.'
And she went to the balcony with a glass of water in her hand and sat there gazing into the blank space amid the trees, with sky changing it's hue from black to blue to orange, rays from east were playing the tricks, she sat there lost in her thoughts. Numerous things were oscillating in her mind.
Why did she marry?
Was it really something she wanted?
And this kid she is about to have, Is she even ready for the motherhood?
All these thoughts are knocking her off, and recalled the day she cleared her CA exam and how she thought life will become a bed of rose.
Little did she know, about the twists and turns of life.
P.S. : A wise man once said "Life is not fair, get use to it."
